Representatives of construction companies expected industry growth

98% of all interviewed representatives of Slovak construction companies expected growing construction output in the Slovak Republic in 2008. It is the outcome of the 2008 Qualitative Study of the Slovak Construction Industry, prepared within the CEEC Research project organized in cooperation with the international consultancy KPMG. In 2009 and 2010 the Slovak construction industry should be growing according to 93% of the survey participants. All interviews, however, were conducted in the early 2008, i.e. before the financial crisis broke out.

According to 90% of the respondents the number of factors limiting the growth of Slovak construction companies increased. Lack of experienced workforce was mentioned most often – by 72% of the respondents, up from 37% in 2007. Other mentioned factors were competitiveness (49%) and weather effects (35%). Employment of foreign workers was confirmed by 39% of the respondents. Direct orders from customers are the most frequent source of new contracts for 76% of the construction firms; they are followed by personal contacts – 73%. The main investment priorities for 2009 were building machinery and product innovation as well as investments and establishing contacts.
