The D1 section to Trnava is set to be temporarily extended in May 2010

The construction work on the extension of the congested D1 motorway between Bratislava and Trnava into three lanes in both directions should start in May 2009 and be finished a year later. However, it will be a temporary solution to increase traffic capacity on this busy motorway section. The construction costs should be EUR 36.5 million and should come from the state budget. “Full reconstruction will probably start in 2011, when the motorway embankment is finished, to provide for a comfortable three-lane motorway as stipulated in all regulations and applicable standards, including a stopping lane. At the same time, two two-lane one-way roads will be built on each side of the motorway. When the full reconstruction is finished, a complete six-lane motorway with other lanes will be available,” said Igor Chroma, Chief Executive Officer of NDS, adding that in fact it will be a ten-lane road. The extended motorway section from Bratislava to Trnava should satisfy the increasing demands of higher traffic, which grew to 55,000 vehicles a day in this section last year.
