Bratislava starts repairing the Old Bridge
The capital starts repairing the Old Bridge in co-operation with Metro Bratislava Company, which ought to be finished in year 2010, at the price about 18 mills Euro. The proper term will be known after the entire extend of damages and the range of corrosion of the bridge parts is known, according to Tomáš Fabor, the representative for traffic systems. The repair begun by the check and injection bores on the 5th pillar to which the ship crashed formerly and which is not protected like a sight in contrary with other parts of the bridge. The railway part is going to be repaired within the 1st phase, where the new bridge deck and rails will be set. Within the second phase the road part, Šafárikovo Square will be repaired and the stage between the bride and Bosákova Street will be build-up. MHD will not be excluded during repairs. Consequently cars could return there; an individual car transport has been excluded there since December 31, 2008.
Originally the city considered reconstruction at the price of about 50 millions Euro. Critical state of the bridge as well as the financial crisis forced it to access to repair, but it did not give up the idea of reconstruction. Re-opening the architectonic competition for the future look of the bridge is also planned.
